Overview

A first-hand exploration of a glacier by chopper, seeing only what experienced mountaineers can reach is a wilderness experience you’ll never forget.  

From our Franz Josef Village base, you’ll fly up to the Franz Josef Glacier in the Westland National Park. You’ll land on a section of this 12km long glacier where we’ve made a daily safety assessment of the conditions on this fast-moving ice flow. Equipped with glacier boots and crampons you’ll walk for two hours amongst the ice formations and pinnacles and see first-hand the extraordinary colours of the ice-flow.  Touch the ice, breathe in the fresh air.

We team up with Franz Josef Glacier Guides who have been taking visitors over this epic icefall terrain since 1990 and can trace their heritage back 100 years. They have an immaculate safety record, rigid assessments and using quality equipment, your safety and enjoyment is taken care of.

  • This tour is classed as an adventure activity and carries a degree of risk; as such you need to be aware that we cannot absolutely guarantee your safety.

  • Franz Josef Glacier Guides are the provider of the adventure activity and have been assessed to meet or exceed the Health and Safety at Work (Adventure Activities) regulations 2016.

  • Franz Josef Glacier is an unstable geological feature that presents certain hazards, including, but not limited to: avalanche, rock fall, ice fall, heavy rainfall, cold exposure, height, flooding, uneven terrain, slips trips and falls, sun exposure.

  • We cannot anticipate or eliminate all risks so take a balanced and conservative approach to safety management.

  • Agreeing to participate is your personal decision accepting there are environmental and external elements outside our control that may cause harm.

    Duration

    • Allow approximately 3-hours duration for the whole experience.

    Departure Locations

    Departure Times and check in

    • We have hiking tours departing at various times throughout the year. 

    • Please check in 1-hour before your flights departure.

    Weather

    • Your flight is subject to favourable weather conditions; if cancelled due to poor weather, you will have the option of an alternative date or a full refund.

    • We recommend booking your flights early in your trip with flexibility for weather changes. We don’t want you to miss out!

  • Additional information

    • Confirmation will be received within 48-hours of booking, subject to availability.

    • Flights, landings and routes may vary due to weather and at the pilot’s discretion. Flight times are approximate and include your landing.

    • Minimum passenger numbers apply for flights. Bookings will be coordinated to achieve this where possible.

    • The price includes landing and concession fees as our flights land in conservation areas and special locations.

    • Moderate fitness is required and a min age of 8 years and 30kg applies.

    • Due to morning ice conditions, Children are not permitted on the 11am Heli Hike from 1st May to 30th September.

    • Clients who are over 115kg and/or pregnant will not be able to participate.

    • iPads or selfie sticks are not allowed on board for safety.

    • All decisions regarding guests participation in the Franz Josef Heli Hike are at Senior Guides discretion.
  • What to bring

    • Warm upper-body clothing (preferably 3-4 layers).

    • Leggings or light trousers, although shorts are acceptable. Please no jeans.

    • Sunglasses and sunscreen.

    • Waterproof jacket (provided if you don't have one).
